With an Olivier Award in 2022 in West End, London, and a Tony Award in 2023 on Broadway, New York, the play by the great jurist Suzie Miller, which has already been seen by half a million people in more than thirty countries around the world over the last five years and which has changed the way the criminal justice system deals with sexual abuse worldwide, comes to our country this year, in a new production at Poreia Theatre, directed by Yorgos Oikonomou, with Lena Papaligoura in the shocking role of the lawyer Tessa Ensler.
A production of the international company “Trish Wadley Productions” and the Cultural Organization “Lykofos” in co-production with Poreia Theatre, under the auspices of the British Council and the Australian and British Embassies in Greece.
Tessa is a young and brilliant lawyer, addicted to winning every case. She has forged her entire career with absolute determination, making sure to overcome her working-class background so she can reach the top of the game. And she succeeds. She always does. She knows well that in a male-dominated and deeply conservative system, “who you know” and “where you come from” are just as important as “who you are”. By working hard on every case, she has evolved into a top defense attorney. And guided by her belief in the legal framework and the right to fair trials, there is nothing Tessa loves more than the thrill of having her clients declared innocent. One night, a date with a colleague goes horribly wrong. And an unexpected turn of events shifts the protagonist to the other side of martyrdom. The up-and-coming lawyer suddenly finds herself defenseless after being sexually assaulted. She finds, for the first time, that the rules of the game – which she herself has occasionally used – may now fail to protect her. Tessa questions everything she believed, as she realizes that the laws are made by men; and that all moral understanding around the boundaries of sexual abuse is solely determined through the patriarchal authority’s views on this issue.
“One of the most electrifying and riveting pieces of theatre of recent years” (DAILY BEAST)
“So timely and so timeless” (EVENING STANDARD)
“A play that irreparably exposes the broken justice system. A play that we cannot – and must not – simply watch, but that calls us to act and change everything” (THE GUARDIAN)
Suzie Miller’s award-winning play PRIMA FACIE (in legal jargon, “on the first impression”) is the play that has changed the way the criminal justice system deals with sexual abuse worldwide since 2019. Following its huge success as a play, it was adapted by the author into a novel, which is already a global bestseller, and the film of the same name begins filming in 2024.
