Mary Shelley’s renowned and “restless” hero arrives in our digital age, aiming to create a “being” for the benefit of humanity. Will he succeed this time, or will he gift us with yet another monster? And where will he face it, now that the Arctic Circle’s ice is melting?
Frankenstein and his experiments offer a perfect starting point to reflect on a series of questions that trouble modern humans: What is the role of Artificial Intelligence? What do contemporary inventors think of their creations? What is our relationship with the digital entities that live among us and know us better than we know ourselves? What happens if machines develop feelings and consciousness, as some fear? What is the role of scientists, entrepreneurs, regulatory authorities, and each one of us? These and other questions linger, with no convincing or reassuring answers.
This play, inspired by the terrifying and romantic novella of the early 19th century and the history of Artificial Intelligence, follows Victor Frankenstein on his dizzying intellectual and emotional journey, his moral dilemmas, his clashes with the academic community, the collapse of his personal life, the loss of his identity, and the destructive interaction with his intangible creation.
The performance includes the use of haze and strobe lights. In certain parts of the performance, high-pitched sounds can be heard.
