The internationally acclaimed Greek director Elli Papakonstantinou returns to Greece to present her latest creation, a cabaret performance with the paradoxical title HOLY BITCH!
Commissioned by the Neuköllner Oper in Berlin, the performance will premiere in Athens at Poreia Theatre from April 30 to May 30, 2025, and then will make its German premiere in Berlin.
In HOLY BITCH!, an alchemical bakery stands at the edge of time and four bakers—descendants of nymphs, gorgons, and gods—bake in their ovens outdated patriarchal myths and bring back to life legendary figures like Medusa. In this bizarre place, a woman will seek refuge—and everything will take its course…
A wild, surreal, animated world transports us into the realm of superheroes, as the action is shot live and projected as a comic book (live video animation). At the same time, songwriter Maria Papageorgiou performs original songs on stage, while everyday humorous chit chat blends with verses by Sappho
The meta-cabaret HOLY BITCH! is a playful, pop performance—a tender response to patriarchy, ancient and modern. At the same time, it is a reflection on humanity”s uneasy relationship with AI.
For the past two decades, Elli Papakonstantinou has maintained a strong presence in major European festivals, collaborating with prominent international institutions such as Sweden’s Royal Theatre. She has established herself in the European theater scene, where her name is closely tied to Greek cultural heritage, drawing frequent inspiration from classical myths. HOLY BITCH! completes her diptych on femininity, reconnecting with her acclaimed Traces of Antigone, a 2020 work that received rave reviews, even from philosopher Judith Butler.
The performance is made possible with the financial support of the Greek Ministry of Culture.
